MVA To ring-fence newly-elected Maharashtra MLAs against poaching
Rediff.com3 days agoThe Maha Vikas Aghadi (MVA) constituents have decided to house all its newly-elected MLAs together in Mumbai after the Maharashtra election results, Shiv Sena (UBT) leader Sanjay Raut said on Friday, a move aimed at preventing poaching ahead of government formation. Raut said MVA leaders met on Thursday and carried out an assessment of every seat. The counting of votes for the November 20 Maharashtra assembly polls will take place on Saturday. Raut expressed confidence that the MVA would win 160 seats in the elections. The term of the Maharashtra legislative assembly ends on November 26. The opposition fears that President's rule could be imposed in the state if a new government is not formed till then.

Lesbian couple accused of stealing girl child gets bail
Rediff.com4 days agoThe Bombay High Court granted bail to a lesbian couple, arrested for allegedly kidnapping a five-year-old girl, noting that at worst it can be said they undertook an illegal approach to fulfill their desire to have a child. The court acknowledged the couple's desire to have a child and their inability to do so biologically, stating that they would now also be unable to adopt a minor child. The couple had been in jail for eight months. The FIR against the couple was registered in March this year on a complaint by the child's parents in suburban Mumbai. The couple allegedly paid Rs 9,000 to the other accused in the case for arranging the child.

Don't mess with court: SC warns lawyer over remark on number of women judges
Rediff.com7 days agoThe Supreme Court on Monday expressed its displeasure at the Delhi High Court Bar Association for questioning the representation of women judges in the top court while arguing for reservation for women lawyers in the high court bar. The court refused to hear further arguments from the bar body and set November 29 for final arguments on the issue of reservation. The court had previously directed the DHCBA to reserve the post of treasurer for a woman and consider reserving one more post for a woman in the five-member office-bearer body. It had also directed that at least three out of the 10 executive members be women, with at least one being a senior designated advocate.
